What this coffee feels like
Like a precise splash — measured, intentional, and softly radiant.
Ripe mango and golden pineapple brings gentle, sun-kissed sweetness balanced by a light, refreshing acidity that lifts, not overwhelms.
There’s a calm confidence in the cup:
subtle layers of nectarine and berry unfold slowly,
clean from start to finish, with a lingering tropical clarity.
Delicate. Bright. Gracefully expressive.
A coffee that celebrates fruit — not by being loud,
but by being beautifully composed.
This coffee's story
Nestled in the highlands of Nyeri County, Gatura Factory sources coffee from smallholder farmers organized under Rumukia FCS, a society known for its attention to coffee quality. The cooperative oversees multiple washing stations including Gatura each delivering traceable, high-quality lots sourced from consistent cultivars like SL28, SL34, and Ruiru 11.
Located between 1600 and 1800 meters, the area benefits from volcanic loam soils, ample rainfall, and a cool climate—conditions that promote slow cherry maturation, bean density, and nuanced flavor.
Though Rumukia FCS faced financial and governance challenges in recent years, its recovery plan is now rooted in farmer equity, debt restructuring, and transparency, reflecting a broader movement toward regenerative cooperative governance.
Sustainability & Social Impact Pillars:
- Soil health awareness: Many members are transitioning to organic mulching and reduced agrochemical reliance
- Water conservation: Recycling and filtration systems used in post-harvest stages
- Financial reform: Government-backed loan restructuring ensures farmers are not penalized for prior mismanagement
- Community empowerment: New leadership includes youth and women representation, revitalizing trust in the cooperative model
By maintaining production through adversity, Rumukia’s farmers exemplify resilience and long-term sustainability potential—essential factors for sourcing partners with ethical or climate-conscious procurement programs.
Processing
At Gatura, coffee undergoes meticulous fully washed processing typical of Rumukia's approach:
1. Double Washing Protocol: Cherries are pulped and fermented, then washed through multiple channels to sort by density. A further 24-hour soak in clean water follows the initial wash to enhance clarity and sweetness
2. Drying: Parchment is sun-dried on raised African beds over 2–3 weeks, depending on ambient weather conditions, with frequent raking for even moisture reduction.
3. Post-Drying: Beans are conditioned on-site in bins to stabilize moisture before milling, grading by screen size, and packing in GrainPro-lined bags for export.
